The city of Los Angeles has a long and fascinating history, with its name originating from Spanish on a river called: The Town of Our Lady of the Angels of Porciúncula. On September 4, 1781, the city received the name of The People of the Queen of Los Angeles, which translates as “The City of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels”. This name was given in honor of a newly discovered beautiful river that Father Crespi wrote about in 1769 (later called the Los Angeles River).The charter of the City of Los Angeles, ratified by voters in 1999, created a system of advisory neighborhood councils that would represent the diversity of stakeholders, defined as people who live, work, or own property in the neighborhood. These councils are relatively autonomous and spontaneous, as they identify their own boundaries, establish their own statutes, and elect their own officials.
There are about 90 neighborhood councils.Los Angeles residents choose supervisors for supervisory districts 1, 2, 3 and 4.In addition to the rail service provided by Metrolink and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Los Angeles has intercity passenger trains from Amtrak. The city's main train station is Union Station, just north of the city center.In addition, the city contracts directly for local and commuter bus service through the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT). It was here that Calship built hundreds of Liberty ships and Victory ships on Terminal Island.The Los Angeles area was also home to six leading aircraft manufacturers (Douglas Aircraft Company, Hughes Aircraft, Lockheed, North American Aviation, Northrop Corporation and Vultee).
In 1994 it hosted 8 FIFA World Cup soccer games at the Rose Bowl including the final which Brazil won.
